In addition to the nonstop pair, where each system saves valuable data in the other, a third system can be started which will wait for one of the main pair to fail. After a failure is detected the 'standby' system will automatically install itself as the missing partner thus restoring the full nonstop processing pair.
With the cost of hardware falling all the time, this type of system makes a lot of sense. It is the configuration that we would now recommend for any system which requires very high availability.
